Know Your Agent Framework for Financial Services: Why Agentic Payments Need the StableX KYA Framework

Built for financial institutions, payment service providers and other regulated payment
infrastructure providers

Payments have moved from person to person, to apps, and then to APIs. At every step, an institution could trace a payment instruction back to the customer or organisation behind it.
Agentic payments introduce a new shift: the instruction can now come from an AI agent acting on a customer’s behalf.

Without proper controls, an agent can move value with no verified identity, no clear limit on what it may do, and no named owner who is accountable for its actions. This creates a new governance question for institutions: when an AI agent acts on a customer’s behalf, how does the institution know which agent is acting, what it is authorised to do, and who is accountable for its actions?

A Know Your Agent framework for financial services is the set of checks that tells an institution which AI agent is acting, who it’s acting for, and what it has been allowed to do, so every payment it makes can be traced to someone accountable. MetaComp’s StableX KYA Framework applies these checks to regulated payments and financial workflows.

What Agentic Payments Risk Without a Know Your Agent Framework

Without one, the risk lands exactly where banks and payment providers already answer to customers and regulators.
  • Payments that are difficult to attribute. If an institution can’t show which agent sent a payment, for which customer, and under what authority, it becomes harder to investigate disputed or unauthorised transactions, determine accountability and demonstrate effective controls.
  • Unclear accountability when agents act outside their mandate. An AI agent can act faster and at greater scale than a human operator. But when an agent acts outside what it was authorised to do, the institution still needs to be able to demonstrate appropriate governance and controls over activity executed through its infrastructure. Without clear ownership and defined authority, it can become difficult to establish responsibility and demonstrate that appropriate controls were in place.
  • Gaps in compliance. If an agent can trigger or influence AML screening, transaction decisions or other controls, the institution needs a record of what the agent was authorised to do and how it acted. Without that context, it becomes harder to demonstrate that the right controls were applied and explain the decisions made to customers, auditors or regulators.
  • Lack of trust across institutions. When agents pay agents at other institutions, neither side can rely on checks it can’t see.
These gaps do not replace existing payment and compliance controls; they add a new layer of governance around the agent performing the action.
The controls you run today assume a person presses the button. The StableX KYA Framework is built for when an agent does.

The StableX KYA Framework at Work

MetaComp, a MAS-licensed Major Payment Institution, introduced the StableX KYA framework at Money20/20 Asia in Bangkok on 21 April 2026. To the best of MetaComp’s knowledge and based on publicly available information, it is the first governance architecture of its kind for AI agents in regulated financial services: a Know Your Agent framework for agentic finance built in alignment with IMDA’s Model AI Governance Framework for Agentic AI and MAS’ Safeguards for Agentic Finance at Runtime SAFR).That governance layer becomes relevant in three situations, from an agent acting on behalf of a customer to agents interacting across institutions.

Agent-initiated payments

When an agent pays an invoice or funds a transfer, the StableX KYA Framework checks that the agent is known, that someone answers for it, and that the payment sits within its limits. Before the money moves, MetaComp’s VisionX engine screens the wallets and transactions involved and keeps watching the agent, combining traditional AML checks with on-chain screening. But the agent initiating a payment does not always belong to the institution processing it.

Agents customers bring with them

Customers may also want to use AI assistants of their own. AgentX is MetaComp’s agentic financial solution: it offers MetaComp’s regulated services as Skills that any compatible AI agent can call, and each of those agents works under the StableX KYA Framework while VisionX watches what it does.

As agents move beyond individual customer relationships and begin interacting directly with agents at other institutions, the governance challenge becomes shared.

Agent-to-agent payments between institutions

Money moves between institutions all day, and governing your own agents doesn’t help when the counterparty is an agent you’ve never seen. The StableX KYA Framework extends the principles of the FATF Travel Rule, which already has institutions share who is behind a transfer, to agent-to-agent activity.

Together, these scenarios show why KYA complements rather than replaces existing KYC, AML and transaction controls: the customer still needs to be known, but so does the agent acting on the customer’s behalf.

If you can’t identify the agent and its mandate, you can’t clearly account for what it did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is Know Your Agent different from KYC?

A: KYC verifies the person or business behind an account, while a Know Your Agent framework for financial services verifies the AI agent acting for them: which agent it is, who it acts for, and what it’s allowed to do. Institutions need both, because a verified customer can still be represented by an agent no one has checked.

Q: Can a bank accept payment instructions from a customer’s own AI agent?

A:That depends on whether the agent can be identified, linked to the customer it acts for, and kept within limits the customer has set. Under MetaComp’s StableX KYA Framework, an agent coming in through AgentX is held to those checks before it can act.

Q: Where does AML screening fit when an AI agent makes a payment?

A: Screening still has to happen, and the institution also needs a record of what the agent could decide on its own. With MetaComp, VisionX screens wallets and transactions before the payment goes through, and the StableX KYA Framework ties each decision to an identified agent and its limits.

Q: How are agent-to-agent payments between institutions governed?

Each side should be able to identify the counterparty agent, understand who it acts for and the authority under which it acts. The StableX KYA Framework draws on FATF Travel Rule principles by providing for relevant identity and transaction information to be shared in agent-to-agent activity.
